Abstract

Justice in Love was originally conceived as a chapter in Wolterstorff's much-discussed 2008 book Justice: Rights and Wrongs and grew into a companion volume. The theme of the book is the relationship between the idea of justice, as re-formulated by Wolterstorff in terms of rights grounded in human worth, and the Christian concept of agape-love. As in Justice: Rights and Wrongs, Wolterstorff explores his theme by means of both philosophical and theological argument and through biblical exegesis. The book is divided into four parts: in the first, headed ‘Benevolence-Agapism’, Wolterstorff discusses what he calls ‘modern day agapism’ as expressed by Anders Nygren, Soren Kierkegaard and Reinhold Niebuhr. In the second part, Wolterstorff develops his own alternative understanding of agape-love as care.
