Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to establish a clear relation between social justice and education, recognizing the present relevance of Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy, especially considering the challenges the modern world’s inequalities present us with. Examining Freire’s pedagogy fundamental concepts of conscientization, banking education, emancipatory education and education perceived as the practice of freedom, we acknowledge education’s intrinsic political trait and the urgency of educating subjects as socially engaged citizens committed to building a more just and more democratic society, in which everyone is given the same opportunities. By rejecting the idea of neutrality associated with education, we emphasize the importance of the ethical commitment it entails, as well as the practice of critical thinking of which Freire’s pedagogy is an undeniable example.
