Abstract

Summary The heavy mineral composition in sandstones has been studied to evaluate sediment provenance in the Mandawa Basin. This high-resolution study combines conventional heavy mineral analysis with geochemical and isotopic analysis of mineral species, providing new insight into the nature of the source terrain and source to sink relationships. Heavy mineral signatures in most Middle Jurassic to Early Paleogene sandstones suggest multiple parent rock sources, and sediment transport was likely by fluvial systems draining large inland areas. A shift in provenance is observed in Eocene and Oligocene samples by a pronounced change in heavy mineral composition than what is observed in previous times.
