Abstract

I’m a late bloomer. I married at 37 and had children at 39 and 41. I completed campaign school at 52 and won my first election 18 months later. At 60, I defeated an incumbent 20 years my junior in a tight race for the state House of Representative. I was 3 weeks shy of 61 when I was sworn in as the first advanced practice registered nurse elected to the North Carolina legislature.
