Abstract

Through an examination of the Chicana filmmaker Josey Faz's contributions to the first three feature films directed by Efraín Gutiérrez, this case study argues for a "symbiotic" model of authorship in which authorship is shared by filmmakers in mutually beneficial relationships. Faz received no screen credit for many of the production roles she filled, the most significant being that of a producer on the first Chicano feature film, Please, Don't Bury Me Alive! / ¡Por favor, no me entierren vivo! (Efraín Gutiérrez, 1976). The symbiotic model makes visible creative contributions of filmmakers such as Faz who do not occupy designated roles (e.g., director, writer) traditionally associated with authorship.
