Abstract

Lahr’s illustrated biography follows Williams’s career from the hilarious New York premiere of The Glass Menagerie to post-mortem squabbles about his will. By modelling each chapter on the New Yorker “profile” style, he can freely mingle biography, theatrical interpretation, and considerations of show-business, sex, social context, and even politics.
