Jingdezhen ceramic culture in the digital era: a qualitative inquiry into digital dissemination and platform innovation
This study examines how digital platforms reshape Jingdezhen ceramic culture through qualitative methods, revealing three key dynamics: reconfigured craft authority, hybrid identities, and tensions between authenticity and commercialization, offering insights for cultural practitioners navigating digital ecosystems.
IntroductionDigital platforms have increasingly reshaped the ways in which traditional craft cultures are produced, circulated, and interpreted. While prior research has examined digital heritage broadly, limited attention has been paid to how platform-based dissemination transforms ceramic culture in historically significant craft centers such as Jingdezhen.MethodsThis study adopts a qualitative research design, combining semi-structured interviews with 32 ceramic practitioners and digital ethnography of 58 ceramic-related livestreaming sessions on Douyin.ResultsThe findings reveal three key dynamics: (1) the reconfiguration of craft authority through platform visibility; (2) the emergence of hybrid artisan–educator–entrepreneur identities; and (3) persistent tensions between cultural authenticity and commercial logic in platform-mediated environments.DiscussionBy integrating cultural ecology and platform ecosystem theory, this study contributes to scholarship on digital heritage and provides practical insights for cultural practitioners and heritage institutions navigating digital platform ecosystems.

Objective: Despite the potential of digital innovation platforms to improve farmers’ welfare its adoption is low due to scanty empirical evidence on the subject matter. Therefore, this study examined the contribution of digital innovation platforms to fish farm output and income in Nigeria. Material and Methods: Data gathered from 187 catfish farmers were analysed using descriptive statistics and t-tests. Results: The results revealed that digital innovation platform provides credit facilities to fish farmers to boost their production activities. Before fish farmers adopted the digital innovation platform, they stocked an average of 733.12 fingerlings, which increased to 952.83 fingerlings after adopting digital innovation. Also, the adoption of digital innovation platforms significantly increased fish farm output from 742.28 kg to 1,057.81 kg. Fish farmers’ revenue from fish farming consequently increased from N540,905.11 Nigerian Naira(USD 1,307.01) to N780,444.98 Nigerian Naira(USD 1,885.82) after adopting the digital innovation. Therefore, the adoption of digital innovation significantly increased farm output and income by 42.51% and 44.29%, respectively. Conclusion: Digital innovation platforms significantly improved farmers’ welfare. Based on this, this study advocates that fish farmers should be encouraged to adopt digital innovation platforms by creating awareness and providing more funds through digital innovation platforms.

This article proposes a process for digital innovation platforms in the energy sector called DINNPU. The research method involves the documentary review of research in the field of innovation, transformation, and digital platforms capable of generating value and innovation to its ecosystem. As a result, we generated a conceptual and theoretical basis that allowed the formalization of the disciplines for the design of digital innovation platforms. The process we propose can be used in the development of innovation platforms and can be instantiated for a specific domain. Moreover, the assets produced can be reused to generate a product from a family of domains. The main disciplines of this process are analysis, design, and implementation of digital platforms. For the case study, an interview was conducted with a group of specialists in the ICT area of an energy company (Utilities) in order to understand the digitization process or current maturity of this company. Then it was validated whether the proposed model or design is applicable or should wait until the company achieves the necessary digital maturity. The contribution of this study is to propose a process for domain engineering, which allows contributing with knowledge and experience, for digital innovation platforms in various industrial sectors. There is an interest in this phenomenon due to global trends such as digital transformation and industry 4.0.

With the rapid development of digitalization and artificial intelligence technologies, the emotional economy has increasingly become a major driving force behind global economic and social structural transformations. Emotional value is being amplified across various domains—such as digital platforms, online healthcare, live-streaming e-commerce, and virtual communities—reshaping production relations, consumer behavior, and patterns of social interaction. Grounded in multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks, this paper systematically reviews the historical evolution, core characteristics, and digital driving mechanisms of the emotional economy. It further analyzes its profound impacts on mental health, employment structures, social relationships, and cultural identity, and reveals its real-world manifestations through case studies of representative platforms and industries from both domestic and international contexts. The findings suggest that while the emotional economy significantly contributes to social welfare, industrial innovation, and inclusive development, it also poses a series of risks, including the alienation of emotional labor, privacy breaches, digital divides, algorithmic bias, and challenges in platform governance. The paper concludes by proposing collaborative governance strategies—such as digital literacy education, platform innovation, legal and policy advancement, and multi-stakeholder participation—to promote the healthy and sustainable development of the emotional economy and offer both theoretical insight and practical reference for the shared prosperity of digital society.

In recent years, digital technology advancements have had a significant impact on various aspects of life, including the management of zakat, infaq, shadaqah, and waqf funds. More and more charitable organizations and financial institutions are utilizing digital platforms to fundraise and manage zakat, infaq, shadaqah, and waqf funds. The management of zakat, infaq, shadaqah, and waqf funds plays a crucial role in efforts to achieve sustainable community development. Zakat, infaq, shadaqah, and waqf are pillars of Islamic philanthropy that have great potential to address issues of poverty, social inequality, and improve the welfare of the ummah. In the constantly evolving global context, innovation in fundraising is needed to address challenges and leverage existing opportunities. By utilizing digital technology and developing dedicated platforms, the potential of zakat, infaq, shadaqah, and waqf can be significantly enhanced, thereby making a greater impact on achieving sustainable community development. The development of digital platforms is also expected to bring many benefits such as increased accessibility, transparency, and broader community participation. This research is qualitative research that employs a library research approach and deductive analysis techniques. The data sources used in this research are secondary sources such as books, research journals, scientific articles, and official websites containing relevant information on topics such as zakat, infaq, shadaqah, waqf, and digital technology. The results of this research are expected to contribute to the development of effective and innovative digital platforms. The appropriate use of digital technology is expected to increase community participation in the allocation of zakat, infaq, shadaqah, and waqf funds, as well as strengthen transparency and accountability in the management of Islamic philanthropic funds. Furthermore, this research provides guidance and recommendations for further development in fundraising for sustainable community development in the digital era.

PurposeIn the digital economy era, digital platforms are vital infrastructure for innovation subjects to perform digital innovation activities. Achieving efficient and smooth knowledge transfer between innovation subjects through digital platforms has become a novel research subject. This study aims to examine the knowledge transfer mechanism of digital platforms in the digital innovation ecosystem through modeling and simulation to offer a theoretical basis for digital innovation subjects to acquire digital value through knowledge-sharing and thus augment their competitive advantage.Design/methodology/approachThis study explores the optimal symbiotic interaction rate between different users based on the classic susceptible-infected-removed (SIR) model. Additionally, it constructs a knowledge transfer mechanism model for digital platforms in the digital innovation ecosystem by combining the theories of communication dynamics and symbiosis. Finally, Matrix Laboratory (MATLAB) software is used for the model and numerical simulation.FindingsThe results demonstrate that (1) the evolutionary path of the symbiotic model is key to digital platforms' knowledge transfer in the digital innovation ecosystem. In the symbiotic model, the knowledge transfer path of digital platforms is “independent symbiosis—biased symbiosis (user benefit)—reciprocal symbiosis,” aligning with the overall interests of the digital innovation ecosystem. (2) Digital platforms' knowledge transfer effects within the digital innovation ecosystem show significant differences. The most effective knowledge transfer model for digital platforms is reciprocal symbiosis, whereas the least effective is parochial symbiosis (platform benefit). (3) The symbiotic rate has a significant positive impact on the evolutionary dynamics of knowledge transfer on digital platforms, especially in the reciprocal symbiosis model.Originality/valueThis study's results aid digital innovators in achieving efficient knowledge transfer through digital platforms and identify how symbiotic relationships affect the knowledge transfer process across the ecosystem. Accordingly, the authors propose targeted recommendations to promote the efficiency of knowledge transfer on digital platforms.

PurposeThis study aims to explore the role of digital platforms in fostering digital service innovation (DSI) in business-to-business (B2B) settings. More specifically, it delineates how firms orchestrate and govern multi-platform ecosystems to pursue DSI, outlining key complementors and their interdependencies.Design/methodology/approachUsing 37 in-depth interviews with DSI decision-makers from leading transportation and healthcare firms, the study investigates how different types of digital platforms enable data-driven services.FindingsThe study extends B2B platform classification beyond traditional open vs closed architecture and transaction vs innovation platforms, revealing five distinct types of B2B digital platforms. These are manufacturer-led, provider-mediated, customer innovation, customer-moderated and data brokerage platforms. The study explores different actors-resources-activities constellations in these platforms for executing DSIs. It further elucidates how platform actors play different roles in DSI depending on their ecosystem positions. Finally, it underscores the importance of platform governance in facilitating interoperability and introduces the concept of customized technology adapters as tools for integrating external complementors and supporting DSI.Originality/valuePrior studies on digital platforms have predominantly concentrated on examining platform architecture and objectives to categorize platform types. Our investigation, which centers on platform-based DSI activities, identifies distinct platform types that revolve around idiosyncratic service business models implemented by B2B firms. Additionally, we distinguish emerging boundary resources employed by these firms to integrate complementors, which may play a crucial role in ensuring platform interoperability in subsequent developments.

The rapid pace of digital innovation has significantly impacted various sectors, including tourism. The convergence of halal tourism and digital innovation offers unprecedented possibilities. However, how the fusion between modern technologies and halal tourism can enhance Muslim travellers’ experiences is still not clear. It is crucial to understand the dynamics of amplification through digital avenues, focusing on convenience, accessibility, and cultural enrichment. Simultaneously, the multifaceted ramifications of digital mechanisms and platforms on Muslim travellers’ journeys are poorly understood. Hence, the current study aims to understand Muslim travellers’ preferences and expectations regarding digital innovations in halal tourism. Moreover, it also aims to gain a holistic understanding of their experiences with digital tools in the industry. To achieve the objectives, the study adopts the methodology of reviewing existing literature from various sources. The study provides useful insights into digital innovations. For example, halal-conscious travellers can find comprehensive information on digital platforms; Halal food delivery apps make halal food easy to get. In addition, Muslim travellers can better connect with their destinations through virtual tours of historical landmarks and Indigenous customs using Augmented Reality (AR). At the same time, halal-conscious travellers benefit from an intricate web of experiences, recommendations, and insights woven through online forums, social media groups, and travel blogs. Hence, this study is significant in highlighting the connection between halal tourism and the digital resurgence and the transformative power of technology in enhancing Muslim travellers’ experience. Practical insights for stakeholders in the overlapping fields of halal tourism and technology are explored, including the effects of digital enablers on accessibility, cultural engagement, and community nexus. Furthermore, the findings encourage the development of strategies to cater to the evolving aspirations of travellers seeking Muslim-friendly products and services in the digital era.

This paper provides a comparative review of digital and human (face-to-face) innovation platforms and their roles in promoting innovation and sustainability. These platforms are particularly significant in advancing sustainability objectives as outlined in Sustainable Development Goal 17, (SDG17) which emphasizes the importance of knowledge and technology partnerships to address sustainability challenges, foster innovation, and enhance scientific collaboration. Through a systematic literature review of organizational and management research over the past decade, the study identifies key features, benefits, and limitations of each platform type. Digital platforms offer scalability, asynchronous collaboration, and data-driven innovation, yet face challenges such as trust deficits, cybersecurity risks, and digital inequality. In contrast, human (face-to-face) platforms facilitate trust, emotional communication, and spontaneous idea generation, but are limited in scalability and resource efficiency. By categorizing insights into thematic tables and evaluating implications for organizations, the paper highlights how the integration of both platform types can optimize innovation outcomes. The authors argue that hybrid models—combining the scalability and efficiency of digital platforms with the relational depth of human (face-to-face) platforms—offer a promising path toward sustainable innovation ecosystems. The paper concludes with a call for future empirical research on platform integration strategies and sector-specific applications.

The ship follows the trade, meaning that transportation (ship) follows the development of trade, which is an appropriate term for current urban practices. The conservative arrangement of the city structure might no longer be feasible to define the actual urban planning practice in the digital platform era. The premier corridor within the city has always been privileged for economic activity thanks to its high accessibility. This research discusses how digital platforms have given a new meaning to urban practices and their environmental impact. The digital mobility platform enabled the less favorable urban hierarchy to take economic advantage thanks to the omnipresence virtue of the platforms to interconnect customers and producers. This research employed quantitative analysis using a multitemporal Land use map combined with a series of questionnaires conducted within the educational area of Diponegoro University and its surrounding area. The findings provided a new statement on urban practices that corroborate with the behavior transformation led by Digital Platforms. Thus, the transformation toward urban digital platform services has significantly impacted the concept of the new urban structure.

In the digital era, digital learning platforms are increasingly used as a medium to improve the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process. This study aims to analyze the effect of using digital learning platforms on students' learning motivation. The research method used is a quantitative approach with a survey research design. Data were collected through questionnaires given to secondary level students who actively use various digital learning platforms. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive and inferential statistical tests to see the relationship between the variables of digital platform usage and the level of student learning motivation. The results of the study indicate that the use of digital learning platforms has a significant effect on increasing students' learning motivation. Factors such as accessibility, interactivity, and flexibility of learning contribute to increasing students' interest and participation in the learning process. This study recommends further development of innovative features in digital platforms to support student engagement more effectively.

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to examine the influence of digital government innovation on transformational government. Digital government innovation is ordinarily implemented as means for the creation of public value. However, realisation of benefits from the digital government platforms has proved to be a challenge, and great discrepancy has been observed in the extent of public value generated, pointing to lack of innovativeness in resource-constrained environments. This research investigates the influence of digital government ambidexterity as an innovation strategy in enhancing transformational government (T-Gov). The authors develop hypotheses relating to digital government ambidexterity with two factors of innovation for enhancing T-Gov: exploitation incremental digital innovation and exploration radical digital innovation.Design/methodology/approachThe hypotheses are tested using a sample size of 690 citizens interacting through digital government platforms. The authors identify exploitation incremental digital innovation and exploration radical digital innovation as factors, and how these factors of digital government ambidexterity influence information quality for public value creation. The success of T-Gov is associated to the implementation of digital government policy which moderate the relationship between digital government ambidexterity and information quality.FindingsThe empirical outcomes suggest that exploitation incremental digital innovation and exploration radical digital innovation positively influence information quality, thereby leading to public value, and this result become successful if there is implementation of digital government policy. Treating the two factors of digital government innovation as complementary leads to public value creation.Research limitations/implicationsLimited time and funds to conduct a country comparative study. The study only focused on urban municipalities, of which it would be interesting to explore rural municipalities.Practical implicationsAdoption of MunINFORQUAL model for promoting digital government platform utilisation by citizens.Social implicationsThe utilisation of digital government platforms would improve citizens’ lives in a number of ways. For instance, citizen municipal interaction for service delivery and social benefits through instant notifications of developmental projects.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to the research literature on digital government innovation particularly from resource-constrained environments. Also, the study provides new empirical test using a data set of 690 citizens interacting through digital government platforms.

The article considers one of the directions of digital transformation, namely digital platforms. United Nations Conference on Trade and Development says that digital platforms create new opportunities for companies of all sizes to engage in trade. They can lead to efficiency gains through lower transaction costs and reduced information asymmetries supported by rating systems. Other benefits include lower consumer prices, increased market access, more competition, better use of underutilized resources and increased flexibility for the providers of services. However, gains are not automatic, and there are growing concerns over the rising market power of certain platforms and the related implications for competition, data protection and ownership, consumer protection and taxation and employment policies. Economic policies and regulations will need to maximize the benefits while at the same time minimizing the costs of digital platforms. Accordingly to Digital Economy Report 2019 by UNCTAD digital platforms provide the mechanisms for bringing together a set of parties to interact online. A distinction can be made between transaction platforms and innovation platforms. Transaction platforms are two/multi-sided markets with an online infrastructure that supports exchanges between a number of different parties. They have become a core business model for major digital corporations (such as Amazon, Alibaba, Facebook and eBay), as well as for those that are supporting digitally enabled sectors (such as Uber, Didi Chuxing or Airbnb). Innovation platforms create environments for code and content producers to develop applications and software in the form of, for example, operating systems (e.g. Android or Linux) or technology standards (e.g. MPEG video). Several factors help explain the rapid rise to dominance of these digital giants. The first is related to network effects (i.e. the more users on a platform, the more valuable it becomes for everyone). The second is the platforms’ ability to extract, control and analyses data. As with network effects, more users mean more data, and more data mean a stronger ability to outcompete potential rivals and capitalize on first-mover advantages. Thirdly, once a platform begins to gain traction and starts offering different integrated services, the costs to users of switching to an alternative service provider start to increase. The transformative power of data in the sphere of economic and social interactions means that governments, businesses, and people must adapt to use emerging opportunities and avoid traps and risks. The ability of countries and various stakeholders to master digital transformation varies greatly and depends on their level of development and digital readiness. Developed countries are in many ways better equipped to deal with the growing role of digital platforms than countries with limited resources and capabilities. The aviation, travel and tourism industry has been at the forefront of digital innovation, but industry and technology trends suggest that further change lies ahead. The sector has been an early adopter of digital technologies and platforms, but steep demand for travel, driven by a growing middle class in emerging markets and the increasing importance of digital experiences, implies that further digitalization will be vital if the expectations of tomorrow’s consumers are to be met.

This research explores the impact of digital culture on communication in library environments, focusing on the changing interactions between librarians and users. In this rapidly evolving digital era, libraries face new challenges and opportunities in managing their communications and services. This research uses desk research, collecting data by understanding and studying theories from various literatures related to this topic. The results show that digital culture, including social media, library apps, and digital communication platforms, can change the way librarians interact with users and the way information is delivered. Librarians can now utilize digital channels to provide services, share information, and communicate with users. Meanwhile, users are also showing a preference for communicating through digital platforms and accessing services online. The study identifies several challenges, including the need for adequate digital skills among librarians and the management of information privacy and security. It also highlighted opportunities to increase user engagement and expand the reach of library services through digital innovation. The findings of this study are expected to guide libraries in adapting their communication strategies to meet the demands of the digital era and improve service quality.

In the digital era, the integration of local wisdom with public services presents a unique opportunity to enhance community engagement and effectiveness. This study, grounded in qualitative research methodologies, explores how local cultural and traditional knowledge can be seamlessly incorporated into the digital infrastructure of public services. The primary objective is to assess the impact of local wisdom on the efficiency and user satisfaction of public services in a digitized context. By employing in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and thematic analysis, the research delves into the experiences of community members and service providers. The findings reveal that embedding local wisdom in digital services not only preserves cultural heritage but also increases the accessibility and relevance of these services to the local populace. This approach fosters a sense of community ownership and enhances trust in digital platforms. The study concludes that the marriage of local wisdom with digital innovation in public services not only aligns with contemporary technological advancements but also ensures the retention of cultural identity, offering a balanced path forward in the digitalization era.

Qualitative studies have become increasingly common and have been used in different fields such as economics, politics, psychology, sociology and health research for different purposes. Instead of collecting numerical data, qualitative research’s goal is to gather information from participant’s experiences and perceptions. One of the tools to get data related to the participants’ experiences in qualitative research is through interviews. One tool that may be helpful for researchers today are digital and video platforms that fall under the domain of the internet-mediated research. The aim of this work is to identify and describe some ethical controversies when using videoconferencing platforms in qualitative health research for interview purposes. Four cases related to the use of digital platforms (videotelephony systems) to conduct interviews in qualitative research were discussed. Rather than give solutions, we reflect upon the possibility and plausibility of using these telecommunication technologies when using the technique of interviews in qualitative research. The ethical issues that may arise when using these technologies are related to privacy, confidentiality, accuracy of information and expertise when using the platforms. We think that the researcher is committed to making the best decisions in favor of the participant when using digital tools to gather information. In this regard, qualitative researchers may be benefited by the reflections we present insofar they may consider these possible scenarios that may rise ethical issues when collecting data. The activity of research needs to be escorted by constant ethical deliberations to protect participants’ rights during the collection of data phase.
