Abstract

It was a year that began with 46 stars on the American flag and ended with the 48 that would stand for a half century. Final touches were being applied to the largest ship built to date as the “unsinkable” Titanic was readied for its ill-fated maiden voyage. The heftiest American president, William Howard Taft, was in the White House, as Teddy Roosevelt was on course for his Bull Moose Party campaign. The world was largely at peace, other than some skirmishes on the Balkan peninsula that were destined to lead to the Great War.
