Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the conditions of jails in Bangladesh. Although there have been many attempts over the past twenty years to improve the conditions of jails, the situation has remained largely unchanged. This study includes description of the problems of overcrowding, jail facilities, and health care delivery. An ‘'in‐depth'’ interviewing technique was used to collect data. A total of six jails comprising one central jail, three district jails, and two sub‐jails were selected for the study. Data were collected from jail records, interviewing of the jail officers, and inmates. The study revealed that the problems of overcrowding is more serious in the metropolitan district jails because of a heavy influx of short term convicts. Sometimes lower jails (District and Sub‐Jails) accommodated ten times more than the actual capacity. Respondents have emphasized the need for separate jails for undertrial prisoners.
