Abstract

The isomer shift of the 6.2 keV nuclear transition of 181Ta in the cubic copper tantalum sulfide Cu 3TaS 4 was investigated by Mössbauer absorption studies. Relative to tantalum metal the isomer shift measured corresponds to +15.22 mm/s. As compared to the alkali oxotantalates ATaO 3 the transition energy from the Mössbauer level of 181Ta in Cu 3TaS 4 is significantly higher, which is explained in terms of the strong difference in electronegativity between sulfur and oxygen.
