Abstract
Countercurrent distribution (CCD) procedures are described for the isolation of coumestrol and 12 other phenolic compounds from alfalfa. Three of these were identified as trifoliol, tricin, and salicylic acid. Elemental analysis indicated empirical formulas for four of the other compounds. Rf values on paper chromatograms and fluorescent characteristics under ultraviolet light are presented for all the compounds isolated.
