Abstract
1.1. Unfertilized eggs of Paracentrotus lividus were found to contain, in addition to glutathione, large amounts of a hitherto unknown thiol amino acid, identified as 1-methyl-5-thiol-l-histidine.2.2. The same amino acid was also isolated from eggs of the sea urchin Arbacia lixula, the holothuroid Holothuria tubulosa and the asteroids Marthasterias glacialis and Astropecten aurantiacus.3.3. Unfertilized eggs of Sphaerechinus granularis were found to contain a related metabolite identified as Nα,Nα,1-trimethyl-5-thiol-L-histidine on the basis of its spectral and chemical properties.4.4. The biochemical interest of these sulphur-containing amino acids is briefly discussed in relation to the role of sulphydryl groups in biological systems.
