The case study examines the Islamic Cemetery in Altach as an award-winning art project and as an expression of the history of migration. It is based on field research that included non-participant observation, a critical analysis of scholarly literature, an analysis of photo documentation and the self-presentations of the communities. The cemetery, which is the first of its kind in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, serves various Islamic communities and reflects the transformations of funerary culture in the context of migration and integration. The case study examines the specific features of the tombstones, and their materials and decoration. Primarily, it shows how the cemetery contributes to forming the identity of younger generations of Muslim immigrants in Austria. It also analyzes the social and cultural aspects that influence the perception of the cemetery as a final resting place and as a symbol of the coexistence of different faiths.

This research investigates the unique identity within the Indonesian Islamic Community, specifically focusing on Washotiyah Islam (moderate Islam) and Progressive Islam. Utilizing a descriptive approach and literature analysis, it delves into their roles in shaping the community's distinct character. Data is drawn from document studies, historical research, and extensive literature analysis. Washotiyah Islam emphasizes moderation, tolerance, and harmony in religious practices, contributing to a balance between religious values and local culture, as well as fostering cooperation and dialogue, crucial for social cohesion. Progressive Islam, as embraced by Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, underscores da'wah's role in societal improvement, involving ulama in spiritual development and security forces in maintaining order. These concepts hold the potential for progress in social, economic, and cultural aspects, promoting holistic human development and creating an inclusive, just society. Grounded in principles of consultation, equality, justice, and tolerance, this identity paves the way for a more progressive and harmonious Indonesian society while upholding deep moral and spiritual values, making a substantial contribution to overall societal progress and harmony. Ultimately, the Indonesian Islamic Community's identity, encompassing Washotiyah Islam and Progressive Islam, represents a polite and progressive approach to the Islamic faith, characterizing Islam in the archipelago.

Does identity matter?

  • Zsoka Koczan

We examine the question of whether identity is just a ‘label’ or whether it matters in aecting outcomes, such as education, employment or political orientation, using data on Turkish and ex-Yugoslavian second generation immigrants in Austria and Germany. We begin with an empirical investigation of identity formation, with a focus on parental investment in their child’s identity, and use this to understand the impact of the child’s own identity on own outcomes, a generation later. The results suggest that identity does not have a signicant eect on education, employment and political orientation, thus suggesting that a strong ethnic/ religious minority identity does not constrain the second generation or hamper socioeconomic integration.

The Phenomenon of The Establishment of Baharu Pondoks By Young Ulama As Well As Relationship With The Welfare of The Kelantan Islamic Community and Family
  • Dec 31, 2024
  • El-Usrah: Jurnal Hukum Keluarga
  • Mahyudin Bin Daud + 1 more

Kelantan is known as the Serambi Mekah (Veranda of Mecca) due to the many Islamic scholars from the state who studied in Mecca and returned home to establish pondok (traditional Islamic schools). The late 1800s and early 1900s marked a golden age for these educational centers, with over 100 pondoks operating in the state. However, the number began to decline in the mid-20th century for various reasons. Yet, in the early 2000s, Kelantan witnessed the emergence of many new pondoks, with participation reaching 70 during the 2022 gathering of Kelantan pondoks at Pondok Batu Hitam, Pasir Puteh. This phenomenon indicates a significant increase in the establishment of pondoks in Kelantan. Surprisingly, many of these were founded by young scholars who graduated from various Islamic educational institutions worldwide. This article presents a study on the initiatives of these young scholars in establishing pondoks in Kelantan, exploring various aspects and their relationship with religious well-being in the community and families. The study employs a literature review to gather facts about the history and development of pondoks in Kelantan up to the present, as well as field research where the researcher interviewed some of the involved young scholars to obtain data on this phenomenon, alongside elder scholars for their perspectives on the issue. The researcher also consulted the Royal Malaysia Police and the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Customs Council (MAIK) to gather data regarding the religious well-being of the Islamic community and families following the establishment of these educational centers. The findings indicate that the rapid establishment of pondoks is a noble effort by young scholars to propagate Islam in Kelantan by offering alternative education to the Islamic community and families, preparing students for more advanced studies in Islamic institutions worldwide. However, this growth requires oversight from religious authorities and the Kelantan pondok associations to ensure they operate according to traditional pondok systems. The study also received positive feedback from MAIK and the Royal Malaysia Police, indicating that the initiatives of young scholars in establishing new pondoks do not disrupt the religious well-being of the Islamic community and families in Kelantan; rather, they strengthen community unity and instill high values among students according to the teachings of Ahli al-Sunnah wa al-Jamaah in terms of belief, sharia, and ethics.

Radicalisation of politics and production of new alternatives: rethinking the secular/Islamic divide after the Gezi Park protests in Turkey
  • Apr 2, 2016
  • Journal of Contemporary European Studies
  • Erdem Damar

This article explores the potentiality of Turkey’s month-long experience with the Gezi Park protests to produce new alternatives to the existing hegemonic order. It argues that studying the productive potentiality of this experience requires exploring the radical political character that the protests acquired through the involvement of contending secular and Islamic communities. Based on field research at the Tables of the World fast-breaking (iftar) protests organised by the Anti-Capitalist Muslims group and drawing from a poststructuralist approach to radical politics, the political productivity of the Gezi protests is located in their potentiality to blur the historically prevalent ‘secular/Islamic divide’ that has dominated Turkish political life for decades. It is argued that whilst this blurring came into existence in the process of constructing a rigid political boundary against the governing Justice and Development Party, it also created a possibility in Turkey’s urban context to the emergence of ‘politics of recognition’ as a radical form of political interaction between secular and Islamic communities. Thus, instead of creating new insurmountable boundaries, it created the possibility of challenging deeply rooted imaginaries in both the secularist and Islamic political milieus.

Islam and Muslim Immigrants in Austria: Socio-Political Networks and Muslim Leadership of Turkish Immigrants1
  • Jul 1, 2003
  • Immigrants & Minorities
  • Sabine Kroissenbrunner

This essay outlines the unique historical and legal aspects of the institutionalization of Islam in Austria and its various organizations. Major attention, however, is given to the concept of socio-political networks in understanding the motives for, and processes of, self-organization of Turkish Muslim migrant communities. Finally, Turkish Muslim leadership (the imams), in Austria is discussed. Based on a pioneer study for Austria, the essay argues that in the context of migrant studies, the religious elites of Muslim immigrants have been largely neglected so far and, hence, deals with their function in the Muslim community and their situation in Austria.

Debating Islam in Austria, Germany and Switzerland: Ethnic Citizenship, Church–State Relations and Right-Wing Populism
  • Feb 18, 2010
  • West European Politics
  • Martin Dolezal + 2 more

This article explores public debates regarding Islam and Muslim immigration in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. The authors are interested in which issues dominate the debates, which actors participate, which positions are taken, and which arguments are mobilised. Exploring three countries with an ethnic model of citizenship allows them to control for important cultural factors and to focus on three other explanatory variables: the dominant model of political participation, the relationship between the state and church/Islam, and the strength of right-wing populism. To test their arguments, they rely on a new dataset based on content analyses of quality newspapers from 1998 to 2007 that enables them to go beyond existing studies, which concentrate on state activities or on mass-level attitudes. The authors demonstrate that above all the relationship between the state and church/Islam, i.e. issue-specific opportunity structures, influences the debates to a great extent.

Islam and Muslim Immigrants in Austria: Socio-Political Networks and Muslim Leadership of Turkish Immigrants
  • Sep 13, 2013

It is well known that the way immigrants are received in a country depends on its people's perceptions and conceptions of foreigners. Even if the law governing access to, and settlement in, a specific country is not the mere reflection of public opinion, or even of the voters' will, obviously, this law does incorporate a certain amount of its civic culture. Above all, the integration of migrants in a country does not depend on the legal framework alone. It is very much related to everyday interactions between nationals and newcomers, to the way the former accept the latter. Much research has been carried out on the analysis of public attitudes towards foreigners to try and explain the main causes of xenophobia. They demonstrate that attitudes towards strangers are very dependent on social factors, but also that they are very closely related to more general attitudes.2 In this essay, based on qualitative data, I would like to show how attitudes are shaped within the complex system of values and meaning that constitutes what we are accustomed to calling a national identity. Indeed, they constitute one single element in the more general question of the evolution and adaptation of national identities and civic cultures in the changing dimension of democracies.3 Improving the cultural and political conditions of foreigners' reception in a specific country means taking into consideration this whole pattern of meanings and values.

  • Dita Agustian + 3 more

Social, economic, and institutional aspects are crucial for supporting sustainable fisheries management. The objective of this research is to assess the level of sustainability of the social, economic, and institutional aspects of fisheries management, especially at the fishing port level. In this research, field research was conducted using composite analysis and flag modelling visualization in the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) as a tool to assess the sustainability of each aspect. Data were obtained from interviews and questionnaires answered by 90 respondents, including fishermen, port officers, and fisheries entrepreneurs in the Palabuhanratu Nusantara Fishing Port. The results showed that, overall, the sustainability condition in the social aspect was good with a score of 79.69, while the economic aspect was moderate with a score of 55.32, and the institutional aspect was good with a score of 80.28. The lowest levels of sustainability in the social and economic aspects were found in the indicators of stakeholder participation and fishery household income, both in the medium category. In the institutional aspect, the lowest level of sustainability was found in the indicator of compliance with responsible fisheries management principles, which was in the good category. These results are expected to provide stakeholders with the necessary information to take corrective steps to improve sustainability in fisheries management, particularly in the social and economic aspects.

The War between the Russian Federation and Ukraine is one of the most devastating conflicts in history, with an unprecedented scale in Europe since World War II. It has a profound impact on Ukrainian society, resulting in complex changes on multiple levels, including economic, political, cultural, and social aspects. The cultural landscape of Kyiv undergoes transformations of varying intensity and nature throughout the year 2022. These processes can be caused by changes in the functions of sociocultural institutions and architectural structures, alterations in the names of urban toponyms, the placement of military posts, and defensive structures, as well as shifts in the perception of public space and associations related to the city. It has a significant impact on the identity of the city and its residents, as well as on the perception of events and public activism. Creative communities, artistic associations, and cultural and artistic-oriented civic organizations that continue their activities have adapted their work and become part of an active volunteer movement. This article aims to explore the comprehensive effects of the war on the general trends of cultural landscape transformation in Ukrainian cities. It examines various aspects of how the war has influenced Kyiv, such as its impact on the creative sector, changes in media hierarchy, the transformation of urban cultural practices, and changes in the supply and demand of cultural products and services at the local level. The article attempts to investigate and systematize the processes of cultural landscape transformation in Ukrainian cities that have not been directly involved in active combat during the ongoing war of Russia against Ukraine. By adopting a comprehensive approach, this research seeks to encompass various facets of the war's influence on cities and urban communities and facilitate an understanding of their interconnectedness with the broader trends of cultural landscape transformation
