Abstract
Nursing aides are the unsung heroines and heroes of long term care. They provide needed physical care and emotional support to the most vulnerable population: elderly individuals who have physical and cognitive impairments. And for this valuable service, they receive very little reward: low pay and few thanks. Not only that, but they are often blamed by a resident’s family when a resident they care for is not perfectly dressed and groomed, and by nursing home administration when the resident loses weight, develops pressure ulcers, or falls. In addition, they must often battle with a resident who rejects their care, as is described in an excellent article by Morgan et al. 1 Morgan D.G. Cammer A. Stewart N.J. et al. Nursing aids reports of combative behavior by residents with dementia: results form a detailed prospective diary.
