Abstract

Industry 4.0 and IoT is expected to revolutionize the manufacturing sector and usher in the 4th industrial revolution. While academic research on this topic has been very productive, it needs to address the industrial needs and issues more closely for relevance and utility. To address the issue of relevance for academic research in Industry 4.0 and IoT, first we have identified the main topics of Industry 4.0 and IoT from the practitioners’ view. Using text mining with principal component analysis, we have extracted the important and relevant topics/issues in this area. Then by projecting a select set of academic research papers on the identified topics/principal components of Industry 4.0 and IoT, we obtain their loadings to explore the relevance of academic research to industrial needs in Industry 4.0 and IoT.
