Abstract

Hydrogen molecules in high Rydberg states (H ** 2, n ≈ 16–40) were produced by electron bombardment on H 2. When Ar or Kr atoms were used as targets, ArH + or KrH + ions were observed. These ions were ascribed to the reaction H ** 2 + Ar(Kr) → ArH +(KrH +) + H + e. When He or Ne atoms were used, HeH + or NeH + ions were not detectable.
