Abstract

Thin Bi2SiO5 nanosheets with excellent photocatalytic activity were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method in the existence of ionic liquid 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium tetrafluorobate ([Bmim]BF4). During the preparation process, ionic liquid (IL) acts as a solvent and template for formation of thin Bi2SiO5 nanosheets. IL-Bi2SiO5 exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than Bi2SiO5 toward the removal of rhodamine B (RhB) under UV light illumination. The elimination rate constant of RhB over IL-Bi2SiO5 is eight times of that over Bi2SiO5. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of IL-Bi2SiO5 can be attributed to high BET surface area and high separation efficiency of the photo-induced carriers.
