Abstract

ABSTRACT The analysis of the secretions which diffuse from the eggs of Echinoderms and other marine invertebrates is a subject which has attracted the attention of many biologists, who have approached it from many different points of view. As a result, there is available a large amount of varied work on the subject and the conclusions which have been drawn from this work have also been varied. There can be no doubt that the secretions are always complex, in the sense that they always contain more than a single chemical substance, and very little doubt that the secretions of different species are to some extent different in nature. In spite of this variability in the nature of the secretions and of the lack of agreement between the workers who have experimented with them, some broad conception of the constitution of the secretions has been obtained and may be summarised as follows.
