Abstract

Summary Cyclic AMP remarkably enhances the percentage of gametophores showing sex induction in the moss Bryum argenteum Hedw.; the response being optimum at 10-7 and 10-5 M in male and female clones, respectively. Effect on sex induction is not accompanied by any significant influence on vegetative growth. From among other purine derivatives tried, best response on sex induction is elicited by 3′AMP at 10-6 M. Adenosine and ADP also evoke some response, but adenine and ATP have practically no effect. Vegetative growth is, however, favoured by these purine derivatives. Cyclic 2′,3′ AMP slightly stimulates sex induction in female clone, without appreciably affecting vegetative growth. It, however, remains ineffective in male clone. The stimulation of sex induction evoked by any of these chemicals is insignificant as compared to the optimum response elicited by cyclic 3′,5′ AMP in both clones. Phosphodiesterase inhibitors (theophylline and I.e.I. 58,301) also enhance sex induction response in both clones, 10-6 M being optimum. These results suggest that cyclic 3′,5′ AMP plays an important and specific regulatory role in sex induction in this moss.
