Abstract

The risk factors for erectile dysfunction (ED) and coronary artery disease are often the same and ED is present in a high percentage of coronary artery disease patients. In one study from our research group, 75% of men with chronic stable angina pectoris had some degree of ED [1]; it was severe in about a quarter of men with ED. Organic nitrates, including the use of the commonly used antianginal agents (nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate, isosorbide dinitrate), remain the one absolute contraindication for the use of the phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors.
