Abstract

In this work, the aluminium alloy (AA8011) reinforced with TiC and graphite Hybrid Aluminium Metal Matrix Composite (HAMMC) fabricated through stir-casting technique. The reinforcement was added particulates of titanium carbide (TiC) of different weight fractions (10% and 20%) and the graphite (1% and 2%). The cast specimens were subjected to mechanical, characterization, corrosion studies, the mechanisms of fracture in tensile test specimens were studied as per ASTM standards. The results showed improved properties with higher addition of TiC and graphite. Corrosion studies performed on hybrid composites which reveals an increase in 83.9% corrosion resistance of AA8011 + 20%TiC + 2%Gr when compared with as cast AA8011 alloy. Addition of graphite intensifies the galvanic corrosion and nucleation of corrosion at the AA8011/graphite interface due to higher H2 evolution.
