Abstract

In this paper, a U-shape tapered plastic optical fibers (TPOFs) based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors are fabricated and proposed for refractive index (RI) sensing. The RI sensing performances for the straight and U-shape TPOFs probes are compared, and the influences of the taper ratios and Au-film coating methods, horizontal and vertical coating, on the RI sensing performance for the U-shape probes are investigated experimentally. The experimental results show that the proposed sensor has a good linearity, and a sensitivity of 1534.53 nm/RIU in the RI sensing range of 1.335–1.41 can be obtained for the U-shape probe with taper ratio of 6.7 and vertical coating of Au film. The proposed probe has the advantages of easy fabrication and simple structure, which has potential applications in fields of biochemical sensing.
