Abstract

A morphological study of the ..cap alpha..-..cap alpha..' phase separation at temperatures above the triple line temperature of 85/sup 0/C is presented. Till now, only theoretical investigations of the morphology of the coherent separation of ..cap alpha..- ana ..cap alpha..'-phases were published. Experimental results were not obtained due to the fact that after H-doping the samples must remain above the temperature at which the phase separation begins. By utilizing new experimental techniques the crystallographic perfection of the sample (distribution of mosaic block orientation) and the phase morphology were studied simultaneously by ..gamma..-diffractometry and optical microscopy at high temperatures both while the sample was charged with hydrogen and as it was cooled into the two-phase region ..cap alpha.. + ..cap alpha..'. The ..cap alpha..- and the ..cap alpha..'-phases both have bcc structure and differ only in their respective hydrogen concentration and consequently in their lattice parameter. The lattice parameter increases approximately as 5 x 10/sup -4/ per % atomic ratio H/Nb.
