Abstract

Centaurea has been used for long, medicinally. It is beneficial in acne, allergic conditions, asthma, bronchitis, bruising, and burns and circulatory. In the previous studies volatile compounds of essential oil Centaurea behen L. grown in Iran have been reported. The objective of this research was to study the biological activities of aerial parts of methanol extract (ME) and essential oil (EO) obtained from the cultivated C. behen. The overall results of C. behen tests allow us to conclude that various extracts of the test, the total phenolic, scavenging activity of H2O2 and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), while also testing DPPH the largest property antioxidant. The antioxidant property shows the ME and EO of both mechanisms of electron transfer and the hydrogen transfer it has gone through. The antibacterial activity of the ME and EO of both samples was determined against nine Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The strongest activity exhibited by the C. behen of ME for DPPH, total phenolic and scavenging activity of H2O2, was determined using three different methods.
