Sometimes people easily judge other people’s suffering as a single traumatic event without realizing that trauma can shape the victims’ identity and emotional ability. Thus, this study aims to identify the main character, Eva’s imbalanced personality, its types, and the impacts of trauma on her mental health and well-being as seen in Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) movie. This study applied Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory (1923) to answer the research objectives, focusing on the structural model of the psyche and its relation to Eva’s traumatic experiences. This qualitative research uses Lynne Ramsay’s movie entitled We Need to Talk About Kevin, published in 2011 by BBC Films, as the data source. The data were in the form of scenes and dialogues related to (1) the nature of the main character Eva’s imbalanced personality, (2) the types of traumas experienced by her, particularly in relation to her son Kevin, and (3) the impacts of the trauma on Eva’s psychological and overall well-being. The researchers were the primary instrument of this study, conducting a close reading of the movie and analyzing the data through a psychoanalytic lens. The results of this study reveal that the main character's personality is dominated by her superego, which leads her to have acute, chronic, and complex traumas. These traumas resulted in PTSD, emotional distress, dissociation, and physical symptoms. Therefore, through the lens of Freud’s psychoanalysis, combined with the trauma theory and film analysis, this study uncovers that someone’s suffering should be seen as an ongoing psychological process. Moreover, this study shows that psychoanalytic theory can be applied to film, which then broadens the scope of psychoanalytic literary criticism.

  • Alison Zucca + 5 more

Our aim is to examine whether provider screening for physical and emotional symptoms, as reported by medical oncology outpatients, varies across medical oncology treatment centres. A cross-sectional sample of 716 patients attending the outpatient medical oncology department of six public cancer treatment centres across five Australian states participated. Four patient-report survey items explored how often patients were specifically asked by clinical staff at the treatment centre about their (i) emotional distress (anxiety, distress and depression), (ii) pain, (iii) fatigue and (iv) other physical symptoms (e.g. nausea and constipation). Asking at less than half of all appointments was classified as infrequent screening. No significant associations were found between treatment centre and symptom screening for emotional distress (p = 0.65), pain (p = 0.21), fatigue (p = 0.95) and other physical symptoms (p = 0.40). The proportion of patients who were regularly screened versus infrequently screened was significantly higher for physical symptoms than emotional symptoms (p < 0.001): 36% infrequently screened for emotional distress (range: 33-45%), 15% infrequently screened for pain (range: 9-21%), 16% infrequently screened for fatigue (range: 15-19%) and 11% infrequently screened for other physical symptoms (range: 5-17%). No significant variation in symptom screening was found across treatment centres. While the majority of patients received recommended care, treatment centres must continue to improve symptom screening rates, particularly for emotional distress. However, screening is only the first step and must be accompanied by the offer of help and provision of help to relieve patient suffering.

Physical and/or Sexual Abuse Is Associated with Increased Psychological and Emotional Distress Among Transgender Women.
  • May 12, 2017

  • Alexandra L Kussin-Shoptaw + 2 more

Transgender women have consistently reported elevated rates of lifetime physical and sexual abuse. This study examined the associations between reported physical and/or sexual abuse and symptoms of psychological and emotional distress among a sample of urban, high-risk transgender women. From June 2005 through July 2012, 99 transgender women enrolled in a Comprehensive Risk Counseling and Services program in Hollywood, CA. Seemingly unrelated regression equations (SURE) were used to simultaneously regress psychiatric symptom reports on participant sociodemographic characteristics and self-reported history of physical/sexual abuse. Participants were African American/Black (33.3%), Caucasian/White (28.3%), or Hispanic/Latina (24.2%). Average age was 35 years (standard deviation [SD] = 9), and 37.4% of participants self-reported an HIV-positive status. Most (84.9%) participants reported experiencing physical or sexual abuse at some point in their lifetime, and symptoms of psychological and emotional distress (as measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory) among those who reported abuse were more severe than those observed in cisgender psychiatric in-patient populations. After controlling for participant sociodemographics, prior experience of physical and/or sexual abuse was associated with significantly increased psychological and emotional distress across all measured symptom domains except psychoticism [χ2(9) = 17.56; p < 0.05]. Given these associations as well as the high prevalence of physical and/or sexual abuse among transgender women, mental health professionals and social service providers working with this population should be sensitive to the abuse history and mental health needs of the transgender women with whom they work.

Exploring the Impact of Psychoanalysis on the Main Character's Personality in 'The Tell-Tale Heart' Using Personality Theory
  • Sep 22, 2025
  • Journal of Arts and Linguistics Studies
  • Syeda Ieman Shah + 2 more

In this research paper, the researcher aims to analyze the main character in the short story, The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe. This is aimed at knowing who he is and what makes him mentally unhealthy. The analysis of the text is based on a technique textual analysis referred to as close reading. It is a theory of personality according to Sigmund Freud that claims that the mind is subdivided into three parts: the id (our urges), the ego (our realistic self), and the superego (our conscience). The readings reveal that the mind of the narrator is imbalanced. His id (violent impulses) is excessive, his ego (sense of reality) is shattered and his superego (guilt) is manifested only after the crime in the form of a haunting hallucination. The research concludes that he is doing so because of a blend of mental illness, intense anxiety and an internal war being fought between what he wants and what he is guilty of. This study shows that the psychoanalytic theory can be a helpful instrument in the interpretation of complicated characters in literature.

Mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency and symptoms of emotional distress and depression in pregnancy and six months postpartum – Results from a large pregnancy cohort
  • Sep 9, 2022
  • Journal of Affective Disorders
  • Anne Lise Brantsæter + 5 more

BackgroundThe relationship between iodine intake and depression is unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether iodine intake was associated with symptoms of perinatal emotional distress and depression in a mild- to moderately iodine deficient population. MethodsThe study population comprised 67,812 women with 77,927 pregnancies participating in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study. Self-reported emotional distress and depressive symptoms were reported in pregnancy and at six months postpartum. Iodine intake was assessed by a food frequency questionnaire in mid-pregnancy. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC) was available for 2792 pregnancies. ResultsThe median iodine intake from food was 121 μg/day and the median UIC was 68 μg/L. The prevalence of high scores for emotional distress was 6.6 % in pregnancy and 5.8 % six months postpartum, and for high scores on postpartum depression it was 10.3 %. In non-users of iodine supplements (63 %), a low maternal iodine intake from food (lower than ~100–150 μg/day) was associated with increased risk of high scores of emotional distress and depression both in pregnancy and six months postpartum (p < 0.001). Iodine supplement use was associated with increased risk of high scores of emotional distress in pregnancy compared to no supplement use or use of supplements without iodine. LimitationsObservational design, self-report information, and short scales to assess symptoms of emotional distress and depression. ConclusionA low habitual iodine intake was associated with increased prevalence of perinatal emotional distress and depression. The potential non-beneficial effect of iodine supplements may have biological explanations. More studies are needed.

A Study on the relationship between college students' emotional management ability and mental health
  • Jan 1, 2019

  • Hp Fan

Objectives: The objective of this study is to explore the relationship between college students' emotion management ability and mental health. Methods: A total of 1000 college students from four universities in our city were selected as the object of the study. The emotion management ability of 1000 college students was analyzed by means of questionnaire, and the mental health status of college students was measured with symptom checklist (SCL)-90. The average scores of the five dimensions of college students' emotional management ability are classified as follows: Controlling negative vent >rational regulation >seeking outside support >controlling negative suggestion >positive remedy. Results: The results showed that there were obvious negative correlations between the three factors and the SCL-90 factors, such as the rational control of college students, the control of negative implications, and the control of negative venting. However, there is only a negative correlation between college students' seeking outside help and interpersonal, paranoid, psychotic, and depressive factors. Positive remedies were negatively correlated with the symptoms of compulsion, psychosis, and depressive factors, while positive remedies and paranoia factor and hostile factor are obviously related. Conclusions: In the investigation of college students' emotional management ability, the five dimensions are closely related to their mental health status. Therefore, we should pay attention to the cultivation of college students' emotional ability and encourage them to participate in some meaningful activities to improve their mental health.
