Abstract

The invariant Hamiltonian of a relativistic free particle can be derived via a strong consistency constraint. Invariant mass appears as a constant of the motion, and minimal coupling to electromagnetic and scalar fields arises naturally from the constraint form. The Hamiltonian formulation yields a simple derivation of the general relativistic equations of motion. The corresponding Lagrangian formulation is briefly discussed.
