Abstract
Abstract The introduction defines the term “God-optional,” which is used to describe religious groups that made theism something that was not required for members. The introduction outlines the term God-optional in its connection to Quakers, Reconstructionist Jews, and Unitarians, who are the groups that embraced the concept. The introduction situates this study within the contemporary scholarship on the religious left and secularization. The relationship of God-optional religion to other movements on the American religious left is explained. The perspective of the author, as well as his status as a religious “insider” to God-optional religion, is discussed. The structure of the rest of the book is outlined.
