Abstract

It is with great pleasure that we introduce to you this special section of the IEEE Transactions on Cognitive Communications and Networking, building on some of the papers that were presented as part of the Cognitive Radio and Networks (CRN) Symposium at IEEE ICC 2017. The wealth of papers in the CRN Symposium showed on the one hand the considerable ongoing interest and progress that manifests in CRN, and on the other hand the breadth of innovation and forward thinking in the area, leading to pioneering ways and contexts within which cognitive radio and associated technologies may be considered and used in future wireless communication networks. This Special Section has invited authors to prepare extended papers, all of which have undergone a rigorous review process, based on their papers appearing in the IEEE ICC 2017 CRN Symposium. As a result of the review process, five papers were accepted, covering a range in interesting developments and ideas within the scope of CRN and related topics.
