Abstract

A familiarity with the basic terminology, techniques, and instruments used in any branch of science is essential for a true understanding of the subject. Therefore, this chapter aims to provide an introduction to a number of basic methods and concepts specifically related to the microscopic study of tissues, otherwise known as “histology.” Topics introduced, include the routine specimen types received in a general histology laboratory and the methods involved in their preparation, prior to histological examination under the microscope by a histopathologist. Important histological techniques to be aware of that are performed in routine laboratories, such as the intraoperative frozen section, and common research tools used today, such as tissue microarrays, are discussed. Microscope types, automated imaging techniques, and digital software tools are also presented. Finally, the normal human cell and its internal components are summarized, together with the basic histology of normal tissues. Having studied this chapter, we anticipate that the reader will have the basic knowledge necessary for understanding the terminology mentioned in the upcoming chapters.
