Abstract
This chapter serves as a brief introduction that summarizes the contents of the book, provides motivation and examples of potential applications, and positions the discussions in the book within the more general context of discrete event systems (DES) literature. These discussions include state estimation and event inference but also other relevant DES topics. In particular, this chapter provides pointers to related DES literature (e.g., modeling, supervisory control, fault diagnosis, perturbation analysis, and deadlock prevention), and also specific references to works pertaining to state estimation and event inference in Petri nets.
