Abstract

The chapter presents general a background and evolution of e-governance in India. It summarizes important ongoing and new e-governance projects spanning across various government organizations as part of the e-Kranti component of recently launched ‘Digital India Programme’. Special reference is made to agriculture-related national/multi-state e-governance projects in India and the challenges associated with implementing such initiatives. A summary of some of the popular agriculture-related grassroots level projects in India is also presented. The e-readiness status of India is analyzed by referring to global surveys. It further highlights the key issues dealt within the book, viz. developing insights about situation–actor–process interplay in e-governance context from the perspective of bringing out a strategic framework for improving performance of projects, exploring suitability of the conventional planning and implementation framework for handling the dynamic context of e-governance and building strategic alliances across government organizations for effective e-governance.
