Abstract

It has recently been reported that the loading of 10 ml of water into the stomachs of food deprived rats before five daily sessions blocks the acquisition of schedule-induced drinking in these animals. In the present experiment gastric loads of water were given before 22 successive daily sessions. It was confirmed that loaded rats failed to develop schedule-induced drinking in the first five sessions. However, drinking did develop in subsequent sessions although levels of water intake in the loaded rats did not reach those of a control group of rats. It is concluded that intragastric water retards rather than blocks the acquisition of schedule-induced drinking.
