Abstract

Introduction: Liver ablation is limited by the heat-sink effect. High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a recent non-invasive technique of ablation. Tissue destruction by HIFU occurred in a few seconds which may protect from the heat-sink effect. Tumors located at the hepato-caval confluence are frequently unresectable and unablatable. We assessed the safety and efficacy of intra-operative HIFU ablation of the hepato-caval confluence in pigs.
