Interweaving Javanese Cultural Wisdom and Islamic Leadership Ethics: An Analysis of Arjuna in Arjunawiwaha
This study addresses the growing need to reinterpret classical Javanese figures through an Islamic ethical lens, offering a unique framework for understanding indigenous models of moral leadership. Previous studies have not yet examined how the concept of leadership in Arjuna Wiwaha can be interpreted through the framework of Islamic moral and ethical principles. Therefore, this study offers a novel perspective by integrating Javanese cultural wisdom and Islamic leadership ethics to reinterpret Arjuna’s character as a model of moral and social leadership in the Javanese-Islamic context. The aim of this paper is to examine Arjuna's leadership as depicted in the Javanese puppet story of Arjunawiwaha, focusing on the integration of Javanese social wisdom and Islamic moral leadership. In the context of Javanese-Islamic reinterpretation, Arjuna, traditionally considered a holy man in Hindu-Buddhist legends, is reimagined as a perfect pioneer. Using a cultural hermeneutic approach and comparative analysis, this investigation examines how Islamic leadership principles, including trust (Siddiq), dependability (Amanah), insight (Fathanah), and the obligation to convey the truth (Tabligh), are integrated into Arjuna's leadership narrative. The study, furthermore, highlights key Javanese social values such as humility, resilience, and wisdom, adapted from Islamic moral lessons. Through a careful examination of Arjunawiwaha, this paper illustrates a method of social adjustment and integration, which examines knowledge of how Javanese Islamic characters shape conceptualizations of governance in conventional and modern environments. The use of an interdisciplinary approach that integrates Javanese cultural wisdom and Islamic leadership ethics in analyzing the character of Arjuna in the Arjunawiwaha is a perspective still rare in leadership studies based on classical Javanese literary texts. This research thus positions the Javanese-Islamic leadership synthesis as a relevant ethical paradigm in Southeast Asia and beyond. The finding also offers a framework for culture-based leadership training integrating Javanese and Islamic values to foster ethical, culturally sensitive, and spiritually grounded leaders.

The phenomenon of ethical leadership in Islam has become increasingly crucial amid contemporary social dynamics. This study aims to analyze the principles of ethical leadership from the perspective of the Qur'an and their application in the case of Gus Miftah. A descriptive qualitative approach based on library research was employed. Primary sources include the Qur'an, Tafsir al-Azhar by Hamka, and Al-Ahkam As-Sultaniyyah. The data were analyzed using content analysis through a deductive approach—deriving general principles from primary texts to examine contemporary leadership phenomena. The findings reveal that ethical leadership in Islam is grounded in the values of trustworthiness (amanah), justice, consultation (shura), and etiquette in speech. In the case of Gus Miftah, a discrepancy is found between the ideal Qur'anic leadership principles and the public communication practices exhibited, particularly concerning respect for individual dignity. Theoretically, this study contributes to the development of Qur'anic-based ethical leadership frameworks within contemporary exegesis. Practically, it offers insights for religious figures and public leaders to enhance ethical sensitivity and communication standards in social and religious spheres.

This study aims to confirm the effect of Islamic work ethics and Islamic leadership on organizational commitment and performance of cleaning staff in Makassar City, which is predominantly Muslim, using 274 employees as a sample. The results of the WarpPLS 7.0 analysis provide evidence that Islamic work ethics is partially proven to increase organizational commitment, but Islamic leadership cannot have a significant effect on organizational commitment. Islamic work ethics and Islamic leadership make a real contribution to improving performance. The role of organizational commitment as an intervening variable is proven not to be a strong mediation in explaining the effect of Islamic work ethics and Islamic leadership on the performance of cleaning staff in Makassar City

We conduct an emic replication study of managerial and leadership effectiveness in UAE, thereby addressing the paucity in extant literature of indigenous management research in non‐Western countries. Second, we compare our findings from the UAE study with those from a similar study previously conducted by author 3 in Egypt, to reveal that there are considerable similarities in the perceived effectiveness and ineffectiveness of managerial behavior across these two countries, but also considerable differences. Finally and most importantly, we examine the findings from the two studies through the combined conceptual lenses of Islamic Work Ethics (IWE) and Islamic Leadership (IL). We find that more than half of positive and negative Behavioral Statements emerging from these studies are grounded in the principles of IWE and IL, implying that these principles exercise significant influence on followers’ Implicit Leadership Theories, and consequently their perceptions of managerial and leader behaviors. Theoretical and managerial implications are also offered.

This study aimed to investigate the correlation between transformational leadership and follower Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) within law enforcement agencies, particularly focusing on the Royal Malaysia Police. Using a quantitative approach, transformational leadership traits were assessed based on leader perceptions. The modified Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) 5x Short was utilized to measure four dimensions of transformational leadership: Idealized Influence, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individualized Consideration. Additionally, a modified OCB scale evaluated the relationship between these leadership traits and followers' organizational citizenship behaviors, specifically Altruism, Sportsmanship, and Courtesy. In alignment with Islamic leadership principles, transformational leadership is seen as a trust (amanah) that encourages moral excellence (ihsan) and mutual cooperation (ta'awun) within the organizational framework.
