Abstract

Ovariole number is useful in quantifying the reproductive potential of grasshoppers, because the number of eggs in a pod is equal to or less than the number of ovarioles. Ovariole number was determined for 10 species of melanopline grasshoppers. Regression analysis showed that interspecific variation in ovariole number is due to body size ( r 2 = 0.93). Body size and ovariole number are associated with length of the growing season, which was found to be a function of elevation.
