Abstract

The pronounced sensitivity of the phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-induced transformation of human lymphocytes suggested further investigation of this phenomenon in other animal species that are useful in studies of the immune response. Pronounced interspecies differences in the effect of ouabain were observed. Whereas PHA-stimulated pig leukocytes showed the same high sensitivity characteristic of human leukocytes to concentrations greater than 10 −8 M, stimulated rat leukocytes cultures were relatively insensitive to ouabain at concentrations higher by three orders of magnitude.
