Abstract
This chapter will concentrate on traditional and new interprocess communication (IPC) mechanisms of UNIX. Files, signals, pipes (unnamed pipes) and named pipes (FIFOs), are the traditional IPC facilities. The new powerful IPC facilities are the message queues, shared memory segments and semaphores. This chapter will also introduce a number of other system commands which are vital for the development of UNIX products.
