Abstract
A short look at the newer literature on the Pentecostal movement in Latin America may help to show these theoretical and methodological desiderata more clearly. A close look into the research literature on religion in Latin America shows a gulf between the different theoretical approaches already referred to above: on one hand approaches near to Rational Choice and Resource Mobilization Theory, focusing on rational strategies and, at the most, on opportunities and constraints of action; on the other hand are structural approaches, near to New Social Movement Theory, focusing on identity and relative deprivation. The social theory of Pierre Bourdieu precisely bridges this gap between objective and subjective conditions of social praxis, of structure- and actor-centered approaches. Keywords:Latin America; New Social Movement Theory; Pentecostalism; Pierre Bourdieu; Rational Choice Theory; Resource Mobilization Theory
