Abstract

Pulse-code modulation of a 0.6328μm He-Ne laser by simultaneous mode-locking and coupling modulation is achieved at a bit-rate of 150 Mbits−1 using a single modulation element. Both modelocking techniques, loss modulation and phase modulation are used and compared. The phase of the output signal is stabilized by means of a phase-locked loop. The influence of the coupling modulation on the resonator energy causes a time-dependent decrease of the output signal amplitude. This effect can be compensated by controlling the coupling voltage. A calculation of the maximum available bitrate for a 2 mm bore He-Ne laser tube is given.
