Abstract

Multilayer Co/X/Gd-Co (X = Si, Ti, Cu) films have been prepared to study the exchange coupling between magnetic layers. A field-induced magnetic-phase transition from the collinear to noncollinear state was observed. The dependences of the transition field on the thickness of magnetic layers and nonmagnetic spacers have been found. The temperature dependence of the Gd-Co layer magnetization and the dependence of the transition field on the magnetic-layer thickness have been calculated in terms of the molecular-field theory.
