Abstract

1. 1. Significant interlake differences were observed in body weight, gonadosomatic index (GSI), serum osmotic pressure and serum Na +, K +, Cl −1, Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ concentrations of prespawning potamodromous coho salmon ( Oncorhynchus kisutch) collected from Lakes Ontario, Erie and Michigan. 2. 2. Highest body weight and GSI values were found in coho salmon from Lakes Ontario and Michigan respectively. 3. 3. Coho salmon from Lake Erie were markedly hypocalcemie and hyperkalemic compared with salmon from the other lakes. 4. 4. There was no clear correlation between the degree of thyroid dysfunction in coho salmon from different Great Lakes and interlake differences in any of the parameters measured.
