Abstract

Since its discovery in 1957 interferon has had a rather uneven history. Originally identified as an antiviral drug, it later became of interest as an antitumoral agent. In both respects progress was hampered for many years by the limited amount of material available for research, but this has been overcome by the use of biotechnological methods introducing the interferon gene into microorganisms. This has permitted investigation of its possible uses in veterinary medicine.
