Abstract

The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) employs at present more than 1,000 people [among them about 250 scientists) in 8 institutes. Each of these institutes is divided into 4 to 5 departments - the scientific units of the center. The research program of the DKFZ mainly covers basic research, but also applied research on cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and cancer control. Several computers are at the disposal of the center for processing the large number of data coming up. The processing of data in radiology and nuclear medicine takes place in a separate computer system; the remaining computers in the different institutes are connected to the central computer IBM 370/158 of the Institute of Documentation, Information and Statistics. The institute built up a computer system, the philosophy of which is to take the computer to the user and not the user to the computer. The system enables all scientists - even those without any knowledge of EDP - to carry through simple tasks on the computer after a training period of but a few hours. In dialog with the system the user may even ask the computer in which manner he should proceed. The paper gives some examples for the interactive mode of working with the system.
