Abstract

Novel behaviour from an FM mode-locked erbium fibre laser is reported. Selfsustaining, picosecond duration pulses which are not at the modulation frequency of 480 MHz have been observed. The pulses form complex pulse trains and seem to experience soli ton interactions, causing them to execute complicated motions.
