Abstract

Abstract We have seen that the application of a strong magnetic field makes the one onebody electronic states very singular in the two-dimensional (2D) electron system. When electron-electron interactions commence, the ground state of the system becomes a novel quantum state, which is another manifestation of the peculiarities of 2D systems in magnetic fields. The first indication of the drastic quantization was found experimentally when Tsui and coworkers (Tsui et al. 1982b) observed a strange phenomenon in the quantized Hall effect in a GaAs-AlGaA,s system in 1982 (Fig. 10.1).
