Abstract

Expert systems using heuristically controlled, rule-based knowledge represent one primary area in which growth in AI research is notable. The educational implication of this research is clear: with the aid of intelligent tutoring systems students would have much greater access to expertise than could ever be practical in today's classroom-oriented environment. This paper examines the potential strengths, weaknesses, and pitfalls of applying expert system technology to the development of intelligent tutoring systems in music within the constraints of a microcomputer environment.
