Improving the Reporting on Health Equity in Observational Research (STROBE-Equity)

Observational studies can provide valuable insights to inform decisions on health equity. Existing guidelines for reporting such studies, such as the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) statement, currently lack specific considerations for reporting on health equity. Health equity is defined as the absence of avoidable and unfair differences that may exist across individuals and populations due to structural and systematic inequities in living and working conditions, opportunities, and resources. To address this gap, the research team developed an extension of the STROBE statement (STROBE-Equity) that focuses on reporting health equity data and considerations. This consensus statement followed steps for developing a consensus- and evidence-based guideline using an integrated knowledge translation approach to ensure engagement of knowledge users from diverse disciplines and perspectives. Selection criteria for the research team and steering committees prioritized diversity across age, gender, and geography. The STROBE checklist was extended to include 10 items specifically aimed at reporting health equity considerations. To develop these items, the research team drew on evidence from empirical studies including a scoping review of the literature, methodological review, key informant interviews, an online survey, and a global consensus meeting of experts. For each of the 10 equity-related items, the statement provides an explanation and example(s) of transparent reporting practices. Use of the STROBE-Equity extension alongside the STROBE statement when writing up completed reports of observational studies has the potential to advance the reporting of health equity data and considerations. Improved reporting of this information may help knowledge users better identify and apply evidence relevant to populations experiencing inequities.

Background:Operating Room Scheduling (ORS) is vital in healthcare management, impacting patient outcomes, economics, and the shift to value-based care. The academic literature offers various solutions with distinct pros and cons.Aim:This study aims to (i) outline ORS challenges across surgical specialties; (ii) examine ORS’s impact on healthcare goals, focusing on patient outcomes, value-based care, and economics; (iii) assess academic solutions’ real-world applicability; and (iv) conduct a bibliometric analysis to track ORS research progression, pivotal works, and future directions.Methods:We performed a comprehensive bibliometric analysis using Scopus data. Biblioshiny from Bibliometrix aided data mining and analysis, spanning 2000 to 2023, tracking publication trends, themes, co-occurrence, and co-citation networks.Results:ORS publications steadily rose, notably post-2013, led by developed nations like the UK, Australia, the US, France, and Germany. Key themes included operating rooms, surgery, and humans. Seven primary research routes emerged, covering Surgery Duration, Allocation, Advanced Scheduling Integration, and Patient Flow Optimization. Citation analysis highlighted heuristic algorithms and integer programing as central ORS themes.Conclusion:This study offers a panoramic ORS overview, advocating an integrated approach aligning patient outcomes, economics, and value-based care. Bibliometric analysis charts ORS research evolution guides future research, and holds significance for practitioners, policymakers, and academics, enhancing ORS paradigms and healthcare delivery.

Integrating health equity in artificial intelligence for public health in Canada: a rapid narrative review.

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in public health is rapidly evolving, offering promising advancements in various public health settings across Canada. AI has the potential to enhance the effectiveness, precision, decision-making, and scalability of public health initiatives. However, to leverage AI in public health without exacerbating inequities, health equity considerations must be addressed. This rapid narrative review aims to synthesize health equity considerations related to AI application in public health. A rapid narrative review methodology was used to identify and synthesize literature on health equity considerations for AI application in public health. After conducting title/abstract and full-text screening of articles, and consensus decision on study inclusion, the data extraction process proceeded using an extraction template. Data synthesis included the identification of challenges and opportunities for strengthening health equity in AI application for public health. The review included 54 peer-review articles and grey literature sources. Several health equity considerations for applying AI in public health were identified, including gaps in AI epistemology, algorithmic bias, accessibility of AI technologies, ethical and privacy concerns, unrepresentative training datasets, lack of transparency and interpretability of AI models, and challenges in scaling technical skills. While AI has the potential to advance public health in Canada, addressing equity is critical to preventing inequities. Opportunities to strengthen health equity in AI include implementing diverse AI frameworks, ensuring human oversight, using advanced modeling techniques to mitigate biases, fostering intersectoral collaboration for equitable AI development, and standardizing ethical and privacy guidelines to enhance AI governance.

The Impact of Industrial Revolution 4.0 and 5.0 on the Banking Industry

Introduction: The Fourth and Fifth Industrial Revolutions (IR 4.0 and IR 5.0) have significantly influenced the digital transformation of the banking industry. While IR 4.0 has spurred the adoption of automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and data-driven decision-making, IR 5.0 introduces a more human-centric vision—one that prioritizes ethics, sustainability, and inclusive innovation. However, the extent to which these paradigms have shaped scholarly discourse remains underexplored. Objectives: This study aims to map the intellectual and thematic evolution of banking research in the contexts of IR 4.0 and IR 5.0. It investigates dominant topics, influential contributors, and emerging trends, while identifying conceptual gaps that point toward future research opportunities, particularly those centered on trust, human-machine collaboration, and sustainable finance. Methods: A bibliometric analysis was conducted on 19,192 articles related to banking, 9,472 articles on IR 4.0, and 393 articles on IR 5.0 indexed in Scopus from 2011 to 2023. Using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny, the study performed co-occurrence network analysis, thematic evolution tracking, and cluster mapping to assess scientific performance and visualize conceptual structures. Results: IR 4.0 has become a dominant research theme in banking, with a high lexical overlap and thematic concentration on digital banking, AI, blockchain, and automation. These technologies have transformed banking operations and customer engagement models. Conversely, IR 5.0 remains early but introduces transformative values such as ethics, personalization, and sustainability. Thematic evolution gradually shifts from risk mitigation and regulatory compliance toward inclusive innovation and ethical AI. Strategic maps highlight the rise of niche and emerging themes, including CSR, ESG, and digital trust, signaling a paradigmatic transition toward human-centered banking. Conclusions: Integrating IR 5.0 values—ethical governance, human-machine collaboration, and environmental responsibility—represents a critical next step for scholars and practitioners. While IR 4.0 has laid the technical foundation, IR 5.0 provides a framework for embedding purpose and trust into digital transformation. Future research should focus on operationalizing IR 5.0 within banking systems, bridging the efficiency of automation with the imperatives of equity and sustainability.

Preparing for pragmatic trials in dementia care: Health equity considerations for nonpharmacological interventions.

Inequities with regard to brain health, economic costs, and the evidence base for dementia care continue. Achieving health equity in dementia care requires rigorous efforts that ensure disproportionately affected populations participate fully in-and benefit from-clinical research. Embedding-proven interventions under real-world conditions and within existing healthcare systems have the potential to examine the effectiveness of an intervention, improve dementia care, and leverage the use of existing resources. Developing embedded pragmatic controlled trials (ePCT) research designs for nonpharmacological dementia care interventions involves a plethora of a priori assumptions and decisions. Although frameworks exist to determine whether interventions are "ready" for ePCT, there is no heuristic to assess health equity-readiness. We discuss health equity considerations, case examples, and research strategies across ePCT study domains of evidence, risk, and alignment. Future discussions regarding health equity considerations across other domains are needed.

Health Equity Considerations in Cost-Effectiveness Analysis: Insights from an Umbrella Review.

Cost-effectiveness analyses (CEA) are important in healthcare decision-making and resource allocation; however, expanding the scope of CEAs beyond the traditional clinicoeconomic concepts to also include value elements such as health equity has attracted much interest in recent years. This umbrella review aimed to synthesize evidence on how equity concepts have been considered in modified types of CEAs. Publicly available articles in MEDLINE were searched on January 25, 2024, to identify systematic reviews (SLRs) published in English since 2013 that incorporate health equity considerations in CEAs. Title/abstract, full-text article screening and data extraction were conducted by a single reviewer and validated by a second reviewer. Results were qualitatively synthesized to identify common themes. Eight SLRs were included. Distributional CEAs (DCEA), equity-based weighting, extended CEA (ECEA), mathematical programming and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) were the most discussed approaches. A lack of consensus on the best approach for incorporating health equity into CEAs was highlighted, as these approaches are not currently consistently used in decision-making. Important limitations included scarcity of robust data to inform health equity indices, bias associated with commonly used health outcome metrics and the challenge of accounting for additional contextual factors such as fairness and opportunity costs. Proposals to expand CEAs to address equity issues come with challenges due to data unavailability, methods complexity, and decision-makers unfamiliarity with these approaches. Our review indicates that extended and distributional CEAs can support decision-making by capturing the impact of inequity on the clinical and cost-effectiveness assessment of treatments, although future modeling should account for additional contextual factors such as fairness and opportunity costs. Recommendations for actions moving forward include standardization of data collection for outcomes related to equity and familiarity with methodologies to account for the complexities of integrating health equity considerations in CEAs.

Advancing health equity: Why guideline development must prioritize fairness and justice

Health equity should be regarded as a fundamental principle and a priority for all guideline development organizations. Yet, this principle has not been consistently prioritized in the creation of mainstream guidelines. In this commentary, we examine a real‐world example from leprosy management, where the initial lack of integration of health equity considerations in the guideline recommendations did not consider the potential impact of the recommendations on the health of populations most affected by leprosy. We also highlight subsequent changes in the guideline development process that reflect stronger consideration of health equity, addressing some of the previous issues propagated with historical practices. We also draw on other examples from several fields to further illustrate the impact of integrating health equity considerations in guidelines. Building on evaluations of guidelines for health equity and real‐world experiences, we highlight some of the common challenges in integrating health equity considerations in the guideline development process. We propose potential solutions using existing tools and frameworks and outlining key research priorities to further advance this goal.

Operating room nurses’ perceptions of teamwork and learning in the operating room - A qualitative study

Background Effective teamwork and communication are crucial in surgical settings to ensure patient safety and deliver high-quality care. Operating Room Nurses (ORNs) play a critical role in managing complex technological environments and coordinating with multi-professional teams. Despite the recognised importance of teamwork, limited research exists on how ORNs perceive and experience teamwork and learning in paediatric operating rooms. Aim This study aimed to explore the perceptions of operating room nurses regarding teamwork and learning processes within paediatric perioperative care settings. Method A phenomenographic design was employed, involving semi-structured interviews with ten ORNs who had completed an advanced course in perioperative paediatric care. Participants were selected through purposive sampling from six hospitals across Sweden. Data were analysed using a seven-step phenomenographic approach to identify variations in understanding. Results Two distinct approaches to teamwork and learning emerged: a team-oriented approach, emphasising shared experiential learning and communication within the team, and a personoriented approach, focusing on individualised patient care and preparation through diverse informational resources. Subcategories included ‘Communication ‘and ‘Reading about the patient, ‘highlighting the importance of interprofessional collaboration and holistic patient understanding. Conclusion The findings highlight the dual perspectives of teamwork and learning among ORNs, with implications for improving patient outcomes and safety. Integrating both team-oriented and person-oriented approaches in training programs may promote adaptive teamwork and interprofessional learning. Further research is needed to explore team maturity and its impact on clinical practice.

Thematic evolution and research trends in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: a bibliometric and visual analysis from 1992 to 2024.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) significantly impacts patients' quality of life and treatment adherence. Despite the growing research on CIPN, bibliometric analyses remain scarce, limiting understanding of the field. A bibliometric analysis of CIPN-related publications was conducted using records retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. Publications from 1992 to 2024 were included. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrix were applied to analyze publication outputs, citation patterns, co-citation networks, keyword co-occurrence and clustering, collaboration networks among countries, institutions, and authors, and thematic evolution. The bibliometric analysis identified approximately 3398 studies published since 1992, involving 87 countries, 4126 institutions, and 15,611 authors. The USA leads in both publication output and collaborations. Keyword analysis identified terms such as "neuropathic pain," "breast cancer," and "quality of life," and thematic maps highlighted motor themes. CIPN research has grown steadily, shifting its focus from neurotoxicity to supportive care. Future research will likely focus on biological mechanisms and improved rehabilitation.

PurposeThis study aims to systematically map the state of work on human–machine collaboration in organizations using bibliometric analysis.Design/methodology/approachThe authors used a systematic literature review to survey 111 articles on human–machine collaboration published in leading journals to categorize the theories used and to construct a framework of human–machine collaboration in organizations. A bibliometric analysis is applied to statistically evaluate the published materials and measure the influence of the publications using co-citation, coupling and keyword analyses.FindingsThe results inform that the research on human–machine collaboration in the organizational field is targeted at four aspects: performance, innovation, human resource management and information technology (IT).Originality/valueThis work is the first exploratory piece to assess the extent and depth of research on human–machine collaboration.

Research Trend of Computational Thinking in Phiysics Learning: a Bibliometric Analysis from 2015 to 2024. This study performs bibliometric analysis to examine research development on CT in physics education for the years spanning 2015-2024. Objective: The study seeks to outline the research and intellectual history of Computation Thinking (CT) integration within a specific framework by examining its spatial development in terms of the primary contributors CT’s development through analyzing cumulative research, leading journals, contributing countries, dominant scholars, thematic networks and the changes of key topics over time. Methods: From the Scopus database, 345 peer-reviewed journal articles were selected. To visualize research networks, VOSviewer was used, while Bibliometrix in R Studio was used to analyze publication trends, author contributions, journal impact, citations, and assess the citation patterns of work over time. Findings: From the Scopus database, a total of 345 peer-reviewed journals were selected. The quantitative data analysis involving visualization of research networks was done using VOSviewer, while Bibliometrix (R Studio) was used for evaluation of publication and author contributions in relation to impact, citation, and trends. Findings indicate significant growth in research focused on Computational Thinking (CT) in Physics Education, with an overarching 33.86% annual increase, peaking in 2023. The research covers 156 journals, with the most prolific being Education and Information Technologies. The evaluation emphasized the exceptional worldwide collaboration with 1,216 authors from countries like the United States, Indonesia, and China. Intent phrase clusters included “computational thinking”, “augmented reality”, and “STEM education” indicating an emphasis on the integration of CT with advanced technologies. The evolution of themes indicates movement from STEM simulations to more expansive virtual reality and critical thinking. Conclusions: The advancements in physics education and students' problem-solving skills, as well as teaching innovations through International collaborations, have begun using Computational Thinking CT). This study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the literature on government budget efficiency. This bibliometric analysis explores the evolution and integration of themes within fisheries management research from 1959 to 2024. Utilizing VOSviewer for keyword co-occurrence and network visualization, the study identifies dominant themes such as "fishery management system," "conservation," and "sustainability," along with their interconnections and shifts over time. The analysis highlights a multidisciplinary approach, integrating ecological, economic, and technological aspects to address the challenges of sustainable fisheries management. How to leverage implementation research for equity in global health

Implementation research (IR) is important for addressing equity in global health. However, there is limited knowledge on how to operationalize IR for health equity, and pathways for improving health equity through IR in global health settings. This paper provides an overview of guidance and frameworks for thinking about health equity as part of IR while noting the gaps in how this guidance and frameworks apply to global health. It proposes an approach to guide implementation teams in the application of IR for achieving equity in global health considering these gaps. It describes key equity considerations for different aspects of IR (i.e., implementation contexts, strategies, outcomes, and research designs). These considerations can be applied prospectively and retrospectively, and at different stages of IR. The paper further describes causal pathways, intervention levers, and strategies for achieving health equity in global health settings through IR. Central to these pathways is the power asymmetries among different actors involved in IR in global health and how these contribute to health inequities. The paper suggests recommendations and strategies for shifting the balance of power among these actors while addressing the structural and systemic determinants of health inequities as part of IR. Explicit considerations for health equity as part of implementation research and practice are needed for the achievement of global health goals. Such explicit considerations should look back as much as possible, and entail defining and analyzing health inequities and intervening on the underlying causes and mechanisms of health inequities as part of IR on a routine basis.
