Abstract

Airline transportation presents many advantages in terms of transit time, security, handling, technology, and coverage. Containers are indispensable for air cargo transportation as in maritime, railway, and highway transportation. The history of the container goes back many years and it is still in use today as it was first used. Today, innovations based on the Internet of Things technology are effective in the transportation sector as well as in the other sectors. This technology change has also affected container designs and the definition of smart containers has come to the fore. The smart container is a new term and since the design process of a new product is difficult and complex, the design requirements of a smart container and the design parameters to meet these requirements must be well defined. Therefore, within the scope of the proposed study, it is aimed to define the functional requirements (FRs) that a smart container design to be used in air transportation should meet and the design parameters (DPs) that will meet these requirements. For this aim, the fuzzy independence axiom method, which is the first axiom of the axiomatic design method, is used to define FRs and the DPs of a smart container. In the application section, a total of 23 FRs and 23 DPs under 4 main factors are defined for the smart container design. The limitation of the proposed study is that the design parameters regarding smart and intelligent technologies except for the physical design features of the containers were only taken into consideration for the smart container design except for the physical design features of the containers.
