Integrative Multi-Omics Deciphering of Gu Shu Kang Granules: A Comprehensive Systems Biology Approach to Unraveling Molecular Mechanisms in Sarcopenia-Osteoporosis Intervention.
Sarcopenia is a degenerative musculoskeletal disease affecting the elderly, significantly impairing patients' quality of life and challenging modern medicine. This study innovatively combines Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theories with modern medical research to explore the mechanisms by which Gushukang granules address sarcopenia. The research integrated multi-dimensional research methods, including network pharmacology, metabolomics, and animal experiments, to comprehensively investigate the scientific mechanisms of Gushukang granules' intervention in sarcopenia. Network pharmacology analysis identified multiple potential targets related to muscle growth and repair. UPLC-Q-TOF MS technology tracked metabolic pathways, while animal experiments verified that Gushukang granules precisely regulate muscle metabolic balance by modulating key signaling pathways involved in protein synthesis and degradation. The findings demonstrate the potential of integrating traditional and modern medical approaches in addressing age-related muscle degradation, providing scientific validation for TCM treatment of sarcopenia. This study establishes a model for modernizing TCM research, offering solid scientific evidence for comprehensive intervention of chronic diseases in the elderly and highlighting the TCM concept of "preventing disease before its onset" in modern medical translation.

Objective To explore the effects of aerobic exercise training basing on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory on the exercise tolerance in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) . Methods From December 2015 to May 2016, a total of 90 patients with CHF treated in Xuzhou Central Hospital were randomly divided into control group and experimental group, with 45 cases in each. The control group were treated with conventional therapy, while on the basis of that, the experimental group adopted aerobic exercise training combined with TCM intervention. After 6 months' intervention, the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) , the cardiac function grading, plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and other related indicators of the two groups were recorded and compared. Results After 6 months of aerobic exercise training combined with TCM intervention, the distance of 6MWT of the experimental group was (414.76±13.92) m, which was longer than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05) . In the experimental group, there were 5 cases of cardiac function grade Ⅰ, 23 cases of grade Ⅱ, 14 cases of grade Ⅲ and 3 cases of grade Ⅳ, which was better than the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (U=-2.254, P<0.05) . The level of BNP of the experimental group was (254.35±49.19) pg/ml, which was significantly lower than that of the control group (327.04±27.49) pg/ml, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05) . Conclusions Aerobics training basing on TCM theory can effectively improve exercise tolerance in patients with CHF, promote the rehabilitation of patients and improve the quality of life, which is worthy of clinical promotion. With Zang-Fu organs, meridians, Qi and blood, and body fluid as the physiological and pathological basis, traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) theory is guided by the holistic concept and characterized by syndrome differentiation. It has made significant contributions to human health maintenance and disease prevention. Modern TCM preparation is developed on the basis of inheriting and developing TCM preparations using modern science and technology under the guidance of TCM theory. At present, the incidence and mortality of common tumors are increasing. TCM has rich clinical experience in the treatment of tumors. However, in the current stage, some TCM preparations have a tendency to deviate from the guidance of TCM theory. With the modernization of TCM, it is worth considering how TCM theory guides modern TCM preparations. Taking tumor treatment as an example, this paper introduced the development of TCM nano-preparation under the influence of modern nanotechnology, summarized the research on the development of modern TCM nano-preparation from the aspects of TCM holistic concept, TCM treatment principles, and TCM theory application, and discussed the application prospect of TCM nano-preparation in overall therapy, drug pairing, carrier selection, and targeted substance selection under the guidance of TCM theory. This paper provides new references for further developing the combination of tradition and modernization of TCM nano-preparation.

Network pharmacology plays a pivotal role in systems biology, bridging the gap between traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory and contemporary pharmacological research. Network pharmacology enables researchers to construct multilayered networks that systematically elucidate TCM’s multi-component, multi-target mechanisms of action. This review summarizes key databases commonly used in network pharmacology, including those focused on herbs, components, diseases, and dedicated platforms for network pharmacology analysis. Additionally, we explore the growing use of network pharmacology in TCM, citing literature from Web of Science, PubMed, and CNKI over the past two decades with keywords like “network pharmacology”, “TCM network pharmacology”, and “herb network pharmacology”. The application of network pharmacology in TCM is widespread, covering areas such as identifying the material basis of TCM efficacy, unraveling mechanisms of action, and evaluating toxicity, safety, and novel drug development. However, challenges remain, such as the lack of standardized data collection across databases and insufficient consideration of processed herbs in research. Questions also persist regarding the reliability of study outcomes. This review aims to offer valuable insights and reference points to guide future research in precision TCM network pharmacology.

The property theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has guided its clinical application for thousands of years. Although the TCM modernization project has made significant progress, several challenges, such as identifying modern biological indicators, remain. Recent investigations have demonstrated that the gut microbiota contributes to the metabolism and efficacy of TCMs, providing a potential indicator of TCM properties. To investigate whether the gut microbiota can partially interpret the property theory of TCM, we searched the “PubMed” and “China National Knowledge Infrastructure” databases using “gut microbiota” and “traditional Chinese medicine” as keywords. This review mainly focused on the relationship between mild-natured and sweet-flavored TCMs (MS-TCMs) and the gut microbiota. We discovered that MS-TCMs can recalibrate the gut microbiota to alleviate various diseases. At the family level, MS-TCMs upregulated Erysipelotrichaceae, Verrucomicrobiaceae, Bacteroidaceae, Christensenellaceae, Lactobacillaceae, and Prevotellaceae, while downregulating Enterobacteriaceae, Rikenellaceae4, and S24-7. At the genus level, MS-TCMs increased the abundance of Ruminococcus, Turicibacter, Parabacteroides, Dubosiella, Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, Oscillospira, and Prevotella, and decreased the abundance of Parasutterella, Mucispirillum, Lachnoclostridium, Escherichia, Enterococcus, Butyricicoccus, Clostridiales, Blautia, Desulfovibrio, and Oscillibacter. Mechanistically, changes in gut bacteria can influence the levels of metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids, lipopolyaccharides, and neurotransmitters, which further regulate a series of physiological signaling pathways within the host. Overall, analyzing the TCM–microbiota interaction is an effective means to reveal the mechanisms of TCM, suggesting that the gut microbiota can be developed into a modern indicator of TCM properties.

Objective: To analyze the possible mechanism of the Huoluo Xiaoling Pill in the treatment of three diseases, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and metabolic syndrome, and to provide ideas for learning the mechanism of “Treating different diseases with the same method” in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory. Materials and Methods: The Traditional Chinese Medicine System Pharmacology Database and UniProt databases were used to screen the main ingredients and targets of the Huoluo Xiaoling Pill. The GeneCards database was used to screen the targets of the diseases, and Cytoscape 3.7.2 was used to construct a “Drug-Components-Targets-Disease” network to determine the core components. The STRING database was used to construct the protein-protein-interaction network, and gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomics enrichment analyses were carried out on the Metascape database. AutoDock 1.5.6 was used for molecular docking. Results: A total of 118 active components and 208 targets were screened in the Huoluo Xiaoling Pill. Quercetin, tanshinone IIA, luteolin, and ellagic acid were potential core components of Huoluo Xiaoling Pill treating the three diseases, and interleukin 6, Tumor necrosis factor, and vascular endothelial growth factor were potential key targets. Co-occurring GO biological processes involved responses to the molecules of bacterial origin, and the AGE-RAGE signaling, fluid shear stress, and atherosclerosis pathways were the co-occurring pathways. Molecular docking revealed good docking conditions between screened targets and components. Conclusion: This study predicted the mechanism of the Huoluo Xiaoling Pill in treating the three diseases. At the same time, the co-occurring targets and pathways between the three diseases provided a material basis for the TCM theory, “Treating different diseases with the same method.”

Introduction In China, animal diseases are treated using western medicines or surgery alone, traditional Chinese herbal medicine alone, acupuncture alone or various combinations thereof. Combination of western and oriental medicine is called integrative medicine. In many cases, this gives better and/or faster results than western or oriental methods on their own. The following notes on basic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, and on the formula and herbs mentioned by Liu et al. (2014), are presented for western-trained colleagues who may not be familiar with TCM theory and its use of herbal medicine or acupuncture as effective therapies. The terminology used in this commentary is based mainly on that in Wiseman and Ye (1998). The principles of building herbal formulas are based mainly on Chen et al. (2012). Details on the nature, actions and uses of each of the herbs mentioned are based mainly on Jiao (2003) and online sources.

With the gradual deepening of the toxicity of traditional Chinese medicine, some traditional Chinese medicines have also been found to have the potential toxicity, with the exception of some traditional toxicity Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine in the growth, processing, processing, transportation and other aspects of pollution or deterioration will also cause the side effects to the body. Clinical practice should be based on the theory of traditional Chinese medicine to guide rational drug use and follow the symptomatic medication, the principle of proper compatibility. The constitution of the patients are different, except for a few varieties of traditional Chinese medicines are natural herbs with hepatotoxicity, liver toxicity of most of the traditional Chinese medicine has idiosyncratic features. The liver plays an important role in drug metabolism. It is easy to be damaged by drugs. Therefore, the study of traditional Chinese medicine potential liver toxicity and its toxic components has become one of the basic areas of traditional Chinese medicine research. Based on the review of the literatures, this paper summarizes the clinical classification of liver toxicity, the pathogenesis of target cell injury, and systematically summarizes the mechanism of liver toxicity and toxic mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine. This paper provided ideas for the study of potential liver toxicity of traditional Chinese medicine and protection for clinical safety of traditional Chinese medicine.

Stressing the uniqueness and complexity of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory system, this paper analyzes the characteristics of TCM as a discipline from four perspectives: scientific nature, fundamental theory, clinical practice, and pharmacological action. It suggests that when the research strategy of TCM theory is designed, the core theory of TCM should be emphasized on the theoretical research on TCM original thinking theory, TCM theory, Chinese materia medica and formulas, acupuncture and moxibustion, meridians and collaterals, and other related fields. Researchers and practitioners should ensure that the basic research on TCM theory is based on clinical practice, research methods (both traditional and contemporary) are exploited, and methodological innovation is underscored. The rule of TCM development should be followed and the characteristics and advantages of TCM carried forward. Meanwhile, the methods and theory of contemporary science and technology should be exploited to fulfill the goal of inheriting, enriching, and developing the fundamental theory of TCM.

This research is to inherit and carry forward China’s extensive and profound traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, combining TCM massage with novel technology and design methods to develop a newly foot acupoint physiotherapy instrument to enhance the user experience. The first step is to summarize the principles and functions of Tai-chong acupoint and Yong-quan massage through in-depth literature research. The second step is to use the existing foot scanning image and TCM theory to locate the Tai-chong and Yong-quan acupoints. The third step is to establish a design and application model of the massage therapy instrument by applying the theory of microelectronics technology, Kano model, anthropometric data, and design methodology. Finally, the foot microelectronics Tai-chong and Yong-quan acupoints physiotherapy device was used for verification and evaluation. Conceptual fuzzy was used in the design evaluation. Reasonable calculations were made through the weight matrix, fuzzy relationship matrix and decision matrix to form a more scientific evaluation result. The results showed that the design and application model of the Tai-chong and Yong-quan acupoints massage physiotherapy apparatus is effective way for physiotherapy. The study provided a certain reference value for the application of TCM massage theory in product design.
