Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper proposes anew architecture for wide area networks. The architecture is based on the concept of independent islands connected via adynamically reconfigured core. Reconfiguration can take place at the level of the physical layer and data link layer, which forces the reconfiguration of other network protocols. During normal network operation, the currently available alternative connections are permanently analysed and an optimal core structure is developed. To evaluate the next variants of the core topology, amulticriteria evaluation of various technical, economic, and operational parameters is applied.
